Dinette Sets – Do You Need Them?

Posted on September 2nd, 2010 in Dinette by dinette  Tagged

If you are looking for a way to make your eating even more efficient, or if you do not have much space, then dinette sets may hold the answer for you. These are a way of combining a little design with simplicity and functionality. As the name suggests, the dinette set is not quite a fully-fledged dining room ensemble. On the other hand, depending on what you pay, it can make a positive contribution to setting the tone in your kitchen or dining area.

Typically, the basic configuration for dinette sets comprises a smallish square or round table and four dinette chairs. This group of table and chairs can then be put in one corner of the kitchen or, for example, in a verandah that is adjoining.

Style for dinette sets runs almost the whole gamut. If you have opted for a fifties style kitchen complete with black and white checkered floor, then you’ll be happy to know that you can also buy a dinette set to go with it. You’ll get that classic chrome table with the laminated top, as well as the steel frames of sufficient gauge for long life and optimal resistance, and the vinyl and molded foam seats that will make your eating experience a comfortable one as well.

Of course, you don’t have to stay at the level of the conventional kitchen table for your dinette sets. There are versions available which elevate the surface of the table to the same height as that of the kitchen counters. In this case the chairs are also correspondingly elevated, again with the typical configuration of four chairs around a small round or square high table.

Looking for a different style? Then try dinette sets in cottage oak or sophisticated black wood. Change the table for a glass-top pedestal style. Go further with contemporary designs that have the glass top sitting on innovative frames and trestles. Get a dinette table that can fold out to give you double the surface area. Even if you do not increase the number of chairs and just stay with four, everybody gets the benefit of more space on the table and more elbowroom on either side.

Naturally, there’s yet more in the way of different styles. You may even opt for a “twinning” of the style you choose for dinette sets with the style that you choose for a larger dining room table with six, eight or even ten chairs. Manufacturers and designers often make small four-place tables and large dining tables part of the same range, so you could have a dinette set in an alcove between the kitchen and the dining room, and at the same time the same design for a complete dining table ensemble in the dining room itself.

Given that you are likely to find almost any style that you desire, it simply remains to check where you want to put dinette sets and to make sure that they integrate harmoniously with both the design and the family traffic patterns of your kitchen and your household in general.

My Life Outdoors – My Decades of Patio Furniture

Posted on August 30th, 2010 in Dinette by dinette  Tagged , ,

My first apartment was on the second-floor of a two-family home. By student apartment standards, this place was exceptional-it had hardwood floors and rich stained trim, a walk-in pantry, and a porch on the front of the house. Our furnishings were a collection of castoffs from my roommate’s family and the previous tenants. We gravitated toward the outside space, but patio furniture-that didn’t exist. Besides, aren’t dining room chairs light enough to be carried outside?

When we moved the next year, our porch shrunk, and our patio furniture did, too. Milk crates were small and versatile; what was a chair yesterday was a table today. But when it was time to move into the first apartment with my new husband, it was time to commit to patio furniture. We took the plunge, and selected four aluminum folding chairs-the new kind, with vinyl tubes on the seats and backs, rather than the woven straps we used at Grandma’s house.

We migrated to our second apartment, where we had both a front porch and a back yard. The porch held the folding chairs, and the landlord’s picnic table gave us patio furniture in the back yard. A couple of years later, the folding chairs made their way into the moving truck, and when we arrived at our new apartment in Fort Lauderdale, we ate our first meal-pizza and beer–on our only patio furniture, those vinyl folding chairs.

I eventually ended up on my own in Fort Lauderdale, and lost custody of the folding chairs in the process. No worries, I thought, since I had a life full of young friends from work. We headed out on the town every weekend, and once in a while, a couple of roommates would throw a casual party in their condos. It was at one of those parties I wandered out to a terrace devoid of patio furniture-just a dartboard. I eventually married the party host, and we were both unencumbered by patio furniture.

Fast forward a few years, and we built our first home-one we designed and contracted ourselves. It was an effort, but we made sure that the house would provide all the features we wanted-and that was a big pool, a screened-in deck, and a private porch off the master bedroom upstairs. These outdoor spaces needed furnishings, and we picked up patio furniture here and there-a hammock for him the Christmas I was first pregnant (guess who used it most?), a hexagon-shaped picnic table that seated 12 in a pinch, and a big stack of plastic chairs to accommodate all the party guests we hosted at our barbecues.

We made a few more moves, and we updated our patio furniture for the most recent one. I wanted a dining set that I would not have to be concerned about when we had those predictable afternoon thunderstorms, and the seats needed to be comfortable. I found the perfect patio furniture one day-a dining table with an aluminum frame and an amber glass top. The sling armchairs were comfortable, and their mesh seats let the rain run through. We added accessories to this set-a matching bar for our parties, an outdoor lamp, and the well-loved wrought iron dinette set that didn’t fit in our new breakfast nook. We placed a few Adirondack chairs around the pool, and our deck, outfitted with all the right patio furniture, was complete.

Wherever I lived, it was important to me to enjoy outdoor living. My patio furniture helped me do that.

Imagine a Stress Free Move

Posted on August 28th, 2010 in Dinette by dinette  Tagged ,

Everything just seems to be getting more and more complicated and because jobs are being outsourced, people are moving from one place to another out of necessity. The number of unemployed are growing and the world is in a very stressful place right now. The last thing you need to worry about when you are moving is packing everything up. Moving things can be extremely tiring because you need to disassemble, pack and reassemble. Why worry about doing all of that when you have to adapt to a new place and find a new job? You can hire movers for very cheap. They can even move ProForm treadmills which are extremely difficult to move.

Buying assembled furniture is convenient at first because it is faster and you do not have to assemble it yourself. But the trick with that is that is more expensive and harder to move when the time comes. After all, you can never be one hundred percent sure that you are going to live in the same house for the rest of your life. So, buying cheaper furniture becomes simple when you buy furniture that you have to assemble yourself. It becomes a lot cheaper and you will be surprised at all the different types of furniture you can get that is ready to assemble. It is much simpler to get furniture that needs to be put together. And some movers are excellent at assembling furniture. For example, ProForm treadmills take a lot of work to set up and the movers make it look so simple. So, take some stress of your back and let others handle.

If you hire movers everything becomes a lot simpler because the can also disassemble your furniture for you. In fact, this step is definitely the time you need to hire movers because taking apart furniture is trickier than putting it together. When you take apart furniture you have to extremely careful so that you do not damage it because you will need to put it back together eventually. I know from experience, taking apart furniture and putting it back together is a real pain. For example my ProForm treadmill required so much work and eventually I hired movers and my move was completely stress less. So do not do all that work by yourself! You will just hurt the furniture and yourself because it really is too much to handle.

Movers are also excellent for moving. I know, that sounds obvious but it is completely true. That is why they are called movers. When moving company hire they hire people they know can complete the job excellently. Movers know how to take care of the furniture, make sure it does not get damaged and they also can lift a lot of weight. Instead of literally breaking your back over moving heave boxes and cabinets and random chairs, hire people to do it. It gives them a job and it gives you the pleasure of a move with no stress.

Porch Swing Plans – Build the Porch Swing You Really Want

Posted on August 27th, 2010 in Dinette by dinette  Tagged

I used my set of porch swing plans to build my mom a beautiful porch swing she absolutely loves. She did not want to buy one already made because they are so expensive! She is right, I don’t blame her, the prices are absolutely outrageous.

My mom wanted a porch swing and she asked me to go look in stores with her. She did not know which model to buy with all the styles out there to choose from. She was thinking about a covered one but after thinking about it, she realised it was not necessary since it was going to be used under the porch.

The store had some nice ones made of metal with thick cushion on it. I remember that we had one of these when we were younger and the metal became all rusty. Besides we could not remove the cushion and soon they got real dirty and damp. So forget about the metal ones.

My mom saw a nice one made of Cedar wood that had cushion that you can remove and take inside. She really liked it but when she saw the price she said; never mind, I will wait. I looked at the price tag, it was almost $1200.00 dollars for that porch swing. I knew she liked it a lot but she did not expect to pay that much.

I noted the model and I found out that I could buy only the cushion if I wanted to. That gave me a good idea. I knew my mom really liked this swing so I went home and pulled out some porch swing plans from my woodwork program. I found the very same model almost immediately. I decided to build her one and offer it to her for mother’s day coming up soon.

I got the list of necessary material and went out to buy the wood. I choose Cedar because it is ideal for a porch swing, it is rot and bug resistant. I also got the necessary hardware and the total on my invoice was $176.00! I also bought the cushions separately for an other $100.00. This was so worth it I was happy to make it that way.

I just set it up in my garage and it took me about 6 hours of slow work to assemble it all together, in my spare time.

On mother’s day I bought the swing at her house while she was out with my sisters pretending I was gonna meet them later and did not say anything. When they got home, she was very surprised when she saw the swing. First she was mad because she taught we all bought it for her. This is way too much money for a gift, she said. But them I told her I made the swing myself and not to worry about it.

She was very happy and so am I because she will be able to enjoy it all summer long!

Designing Your Dining Room

Posted on August 24th, 2010 in Dinette by dinette  Tagged ,

It shouldn’t be a monumental task to pick out a dining set. But it can be. There are so many choices. So there are so many things to plan out and think about in advance. There are the number of place settings you will need. There is the size and shape to think about.

You should always make your selection before you go out to the show room. Formal dining room sets are named as such because of their size, not their design.

A five-piece set, however, may be perfect for smaller rooms. You can also be smart and use an adjustable set, which makes way for both the daily small gathering and occasional large ones.

If you don’t come to some definite conclusions in advance you will be disappointed. The colors should be complementary, the furnishings unique. It just cannot be tastelessly done. Realize how many people’s company you want to enjoy while you take your repast.

Forgo the serving tables if you don’t think they will come in handy. If you buy the parts separately, you can actually save on some cash because of the difference.

A lot of space, on the other hand, will look big and empty if you don’t fill it with something. Consider the cosmetic costs, such as painting, flooring, decorative trim, built-ins and window treatments. That’s a lot to take into account, but you can do it.

In the end, the goal is to be sure that all the diners are comfortable in your dining room. Some of the latter styles can have strange shapes that people aren’t’ used to. You don’t want your guests to worry about the weird shape of the table.

Your dining room will look so good with all that fancy new furniture in it. Just be careful not to scratch it all. That’s a whole different set of problems.

How to Choose the Best Small Kitchen Furniture

Posted on August 23rd, 2010 in Dinette by dinette  Tagged , ,

Does your kitchen need some furniture that fits in a small space? There are many types and styles to consider when looking for small kitchen furniture or a small kitchen dinette set, but you also have to keep in mind how the furniture is going to function in the room and with your family. Certain styles may not work if you have a large family or small children. Here are some things to keep in mind when picking out your small kitchen furniture.

How Many People?

The first thing you must consider is the number of people in your family or the number of people you want to be able to entertain. A corner nook or diner style table will work perfectly if you have a larger family as this type of small kitchen furniture will hold approximately six people. If your family is a little bit smaller, then a small dinette set that is taller with bar stools may work best for them. It will take up minimal space, but will still seat four people comfortably. Of course, you can always consider a traditional small dinette set, just keep in mind the amount of space you have versus the number of people it must accommodate.

Are There Children?

If you have small children, then certain styles of small kitchen furniture may not work for you family. Smaller children will be unable to successfully perch themselves on top of a stool for example. While a bar table with stools may fit in your space nicely you definitely do not want to have your kids falling off the seats.

A bench or booth may be better instead, not only because they will be able to sit comfortably but also because sometimes it can be hard to keep them in their seats. You can put the children to the inside of the booth so they will not go running off in the middle of dinner, and you can easily get in and out of the small kitchen furniture to grab any items you have forgotten. Older children and teenagers might feel as if the booth is too juvenile for them, so just keep in mind that your small kitchen furniture may need to evolve with your family.

Consider Size

Not only do you need to consider the size of the type of small dinette set you want, you need to consider the size of the people using the set. While a both may be a perfect idea for your young children and the number of people in your family, it may not be easy for larger members of the family to get in and out of the booth or bench. You do not want to make your family struggle to get in a comfortable position to eat. Perhaps the best solution in this case is to get more traditional small kitchen furniture such as a round table and chairs. Just keep in mind the size of the actual table when doing this.

Keep all of the above issues in mind when picking out your small kitchen furniture for the best results. Every family is different, and one style does not work for everyone. Know your family’s needs and plan your furniture around those needs.
